The History of Pantomime

Pantomime is a bit like Marmite…no, it hasn’t just changed from glass jars to plastic ones….you either love it or hate it. Judging by the Saturday afternoon crowd who cram into Freshfield Hall every year, Ashdown Pantomimers are doing something right. How do we persuade those who disapprove of Panto to come along and suck it and see – in my experience, those who are most vociferous in their aversion to this venerable art form are those who have never seen one or those who confuse our humble productions with those very glitzy, soap star ridden affairs in Britain’s provincial cities. The village panto is a different beast altogether.
